Renting in the riverside ward
The ward runs from the town centre down to the Thames and takes in Eel Pie Island. Over half of its households live in flats or shared houses. In 2021, 35.2% lived in a purpose-built block and 18.6% in part of a converted or shared house, and 4.3% lived in a commercial building, such as a flat over a shop, the highest share in the borough.

Old streets between King Street and the river
Most of the riverside is in the Twickenham Riverside conservation area, whose appraisal the council adopted in November 2023. Church Street keeps the narrow burgage plots of the medieval village and is mainly shops. Water Lane and Bell Lane, which lead down towards the river, are lined with short terraces of workers' cottages. Lebanon Park is a street of Edwardian houses on the grounds of Mount Lebanon, a villa that burned down in 1909, and beside it Lebanon Court and Sion Court are four-storey blocks of mansion flats from the 1920s. Further east, Montpelier Row is 18th-century terraces of three and four storeys, most of them listed.
A top-floor mansion flat or a flat over a Church Street shop is worth mentioning, so give us the floor when you ring. The tall Georgian houses are where a double oven or a range cooker is more likely.
The rebuild on Water Lane and Wharf Lane
The council's riverside scheme puts 45 homes into two buildings, one on Water Lane and one on Wharf Lane, either side of a rebuilt Diamond Jubilee Gardens. Half will be affordable: 81% of those for rent and 19% shared ownership. Hopkins Architects won the design competition in 2019 and Kier is the builder. The project page, updated on 22 September 2026, says demolition was complete and piling for the foundations was due to start by the end of March 2026, and gives winter 2027 for completion.
The parking round the site has gone for good. A council letter of May 2025 announced the removal of the spaces immediately around it in The Embankment, Water Lane and Wharf Lane, and once building ends that stretch of The Embankment will be shut to motor vehicles except from 7am to 10am each day, for servicing properties on the south side of King Street. Zone D hours on the riverside streets
The Embankment, Water Lane and Wharf Lane are in Central Twickenham's Zone D, which the council's list of parking zones gives as controlled from 8.30am to 6.30pm, Monday to Saturday, with bank holidays free. A Sunday visit falls outside those hours and costs the same as a weekday. During the hours the van needs a paid bay or a visitor permit, and other streets in the ward can sit in other zones, so check the signs on your street and tell us the street name when you book.

Said after the sign-off
Very satisfied with the service. They were slightly late at first but I got a call from customer service to let me know, and it was all fine. The oven man, as he called himself, arrived and worked very hard for a couple of hours. My oven now looks like it has never been used.
I would certainly recommend this service, very efficient and good value for money. The young man did a great job and even cleaned the kitchen floor. Thank you.
