Turkey Street is on record in 1427 as the lane running west from Enfield Wash to a point south of Bull's Cross. Its eastern end follows the Turkey Brook, and a three-arched bridge of brick and stone carried it over the brook near the site of today's station from 1791.
Eighteenth-century houses west of the station
The lane was one of Enfield's older settlements, with ten houses in 1572 and the Plough inn by 1752; in 1754 its cottages stood in a group near the inn, just east of the bridge over the New River. Two pairs from that century survive and are listed at Grade II. Nos. 120 and 122 are red brick, two storeys and an attic under a tiled gambrel roof, with Gothick casements. Nos. 138 and 140, stuccoed and from about the middle of the century, kept much mid-18th-century work inside, including staircases and panelling. In the mid 19th century the only substantial house on the street was Roselands, the Jones family's 18th-century house; from 1968 its grounds held the upper school of St Ignatius's College. By 1972, the county history says, a row of small houses of about 1800 survived on the south side amid extensive modern building.
Forty Hill station, renamed Turkey Street
The Great Eastern opened its line from Lower Edmonton to Cheshunt in 1891, with a station here called Forty Hill. After electric trams arrived on Hertford Road, the line closed to passengers in 1909. It reopened from 1915 to 1919 for munitions workers, then carried freight only until electric trains brought it back at the start of the 1960s, when the station took the name Turkey Street.
Flats and terraces around the station
The census area the House of Commons Library names Turkey Street (MSOA Enfield 002) takes in Turkey Street either side of the station, Brookside Gardens and some streets off Hertford Road. Of its 3,341 households in 2021, 35.2% lived in a purpose-built block of flats, 31.7% in a terraced house and 24.5% in a semi. 33.7% rented from the council or a housing association, against 26.7% renting privately and 38.0% owning.
Flats and small terraces usually have a built-in single or a freestanding cooker. A single takes about 90 minutes: the racks and trays come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, while the cavity, the fan cover and the door glass are degreased by hand in the kitchen.
