St Andrew's, Totteridge, was rebuilt in 1790 in a Regency style on the site of a 13th-century chapel, and its weatherboarded wooden tower may go back to Elizabethan times.
A ribbon of big houses along the ridge
Barnet made Totteridge a conservation area in 1970. It is a single string of houses along a gravel ridge between Mill Hill and Whetstone, with fields sloping away to Dollis Brook on the north and Folly Brook on the south. The council counts about 450 properties in it and put the population at around 1,700 in 2001; 48 of the buildings are listed and 24 more locally listed.

Why the suburbs stopped at the village
The interwar and post-war building that filled Whetstone halted at the conservation area's eastern edge, because the land was already taken by large detached houses in big grounds, built before 1918. The fields to the west were barely touched by 1939, and after the 1947 planning act the Green Belt kept them open. Most of the conservation area is Green Belt today.
The figures show it. In the Census small area that takes in the village centre (Barnet 007C) there were 507 households in 2021; 75.9% lived in a detached house, only 1.2% in a purpose-built flat, and 85.6% owned their home.
