The Great Northern Railway opened the station as plain Totteridge on 1 April 1872 and renamed it Totteridge and Whetstone two years later. It stands on the north side of Totteridge Lane, just east of the Dollis Brook, the old line between the two places, so the station named after Totteridge is on the Whetstone bank.
Houses where the railway kept its horses
Barnet's local history records that the railway company ran a hospital for its horses near the station from about 1884, on the ground where Blakeney Close now stands. Blakeney Close and Manus Way are the closes beside the station today, and the goods yard, closed in 1962, became the station car park. Northern line trains took over in April 1940.
The Census small area round the station (Barnet 008E), which takes in these closes and the east end of Totteridge Lane, had 693 households in 2021. Half of them, 49.9%, lived in a semi, 17.2% in a terraced house and 19.9% in a purpose-built flat; 72.0% owned their home.
The TW parking zone and the 2pm to 3pm hour
Barnet made the latest extension of the Totteridge and Whetstone (TW) zone permanent from 31 May 2026, after an experiment that began on 17 March 2025. It covers Swan Lane, Manus Way, Blakeney Close, The Mount, St Margarets Avenue and Baxendale, with permits also open to part of Totteridge Lane. Two kinds of bay matter for the van:
- TW resident bays and permit-only areas
- Controlled 2pm to 3pm, Monday to Friday. In that hour a car needs a TW permit or a TW visitor voucher; outside it the permit rule does not apply.
- Pay-by-phone bays
- On Naylor Road, Birley Road and Swan Lane, 8am to 6.30pm, Monday to Saturday, with a 2-hour maximum stay.
The 2-hour limit suits a single, which takes about 90 minutes; a double at about 2 hours is tight, and a range cooker at 2 to 3 hours does not fit. For a range, a resident bay outside the controlled hour, or your drive, is the better place for the van.

The price depends only on the appliance: a single, a double, a range or an AGA, plus a hob or hood if you want them done. It is fixed on the phone and does not change on the day.

Is this the same as Totteridge village?
No. The village and its big houses are about 2 km west along Totteridge Lane, on the Totteridge page; the High Road side has its own Whetstone page.
Will I need to give you a visitor voucher?
Only if the van is in a TW bay or permit-only area between 2pm and 3pm on a weekday. Mention the zone when you book.
Is a Sunday visit easier for parking?
On the bays above, yes: the TW hour runs Monday to Friday and the pay-by-phone bays Monday to Saturday, so neither applies on a Sunday. A Sunday costs the same as a weekday.
