Most of our N20 work splits two ways: the Victorian and Edwardian houses off Oakleigh Road and Whetstone High Road, and the big detached plots up on Totteridge Common and Totteridge Lane where an AGA or a range cooker is the norm. The station on the High Barnet branch of the Northern line has been there since 1872, and the streets right behind it are where the parking gets fiddly for us.
Parking around the station and the CPZ
The Totteridge and Whetstone (TW) controlled parking zone first came in during April 2016 on Hayward Road, Birley Road and Naylor Road, then spread. The experimental extension from March 2025 pulled in Manus Way, Swan Lane, The Mount and part of Totteridge Lane, so on a weekday visit near the station we plan the van bay before we set off. Much of the zone only bites for a single hour, 2pm to 3pm, which is a Barnet quirk worth knowing. Out on Totteridge Common the driveways are long. Parking there is easy.
What the kitchens are like here
The conservation area, designated back in 1968, runs the ribbon of large period houses either side of Totteridge Village, and those kitchens tend to hold a two-oven AGA or a wide Rangemaster rather than a slot-in single. A two-oven AGA is £143 and takes the best part of a morning. Down towards Whetstone the terraces off the High Road more often have a freestanding double or an integrated single in a fitted run. Common questions
Do you charge extra for the Totteridge Common area?
No. Prices are fixed on the phone and there is no premium-area surcharge, so a single oven is £77 whether you are on Totteridge Common or in a flat near the station. No call-out fee inside the North and South Circular.
How long does a two-oven AGA take?
Around half a day. The lids, plates and doors come off and go through the dip tank in the van while the enamel is worked by hand indoors, and it is heat-tested before we sign it off.
Will there be a chemical smell afterwards?
No. The soaking happens outside in the van; indoors we use non-caustic products on the cavity, fan cover and door glass, so the kitchen is usable straight away.
Can you do a weekend slot?
Yes, we work seven days. Saturdays near the station fill quickly because the CPZ hour is easier to work around at the weekend.
