Since 1 March 2021 stretches of Tottenham Court Road have been open only to buses and cycles from 8am to 7pm, Monday to Saturday. It came with Camden's West End Project, which also made the road two-way.
Flats over the shops and in the side streets
The road is known for furniture shops, Heal's among them, and in the 1950s and 1960s it was known for shops selling Second World War surplus radio and electronics. The homes are upstairs and behind it. Percy Street, off the west side towards the southern end, shows how old some of them are: Francis and William Goodge granted the building leases in 1764 and 1766, and by 1770 there were 28 houses, a uniform row of three storeys in stock brick with mansard roofs. By 1949 most had shop fronts.
The Census output area that takes in Percy Street, Stephen Street and Hanway Place, behind the west side of the road, had 128 households in 2021. Most of them, 74.2%, lived in purpose-built flats; 46.0% of households rented privately and 29.8% rented from the council.
A flat over a shop or in a block behind the road can have a compact fitted kitchen with a built-in oven. The racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately; the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand indoors, with dust sheets down first.

Getting a van to Tottenham Court Road
In the restricted hours the van cannot use the bus and cycle sections, and Camden's own guidance warns that a driver approaching the southern end is made to turn right into Great Russell Street. Most of the road is in Camden's zone CA-E, where bays and yellow lines are controlled from 8.30am to 6.30pm Monday to Saturday and not on Sunday. At the southern end, around Bedford Avenue and Stephen Street, the road is in CA-C: single yellow lines and paid bays follow those hours, but resident and permit-holder bays are controlled 24 hours a day, every day. Can the van stop on Tottenham Court Road itself?
Not on the bus and cycle sections between 8am and 7pm, Monday to Saturday. A side street is the likelier place, so give us the street door you use when you book.
Is Sunday an easier day here?
Mostly. The bus and cycle hours and the CA-E controls do not run on a Sunday, and neither do CA-C's yellow-line and paid-bay controls, but CA-C resident bays stay controlled round the clock. Weekend visits cost the weekday price.
My kitchen is open-plan. Where does the work happen?
In the kitchen, on dust sheets. The cavity, door glass and seals are cleaned by hand there, while the racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately.
