Sir Audley Neeld started a "garden city" estate at Tokyngton (London Gardens Trust gives the year as 1913), on the far side of the Great Central line from Wembley Stadium, and it was still being built after the First World War.
Neeld's garden suburb by Oakington Manor Drive
Brent's archive history calls it the Oakington Manor Estate and says the scheme went on, much altered, until 1932. That year Neeld extended it and gave the council the old manor house with land for a park. The house did not last: it was blown up in an air-raid exercise in 1939. The place name is far older. Tokyngton is first recorded in 1171 and means the farm of the sons of Toca. The area is also known as Monks Park, after the Neeld family's house at Corsham in Wiltshire.
The streets are still mostly family houses. At the 2021 Census, 56.3% of the 2,828 households in Tokyngton ward lived in a semi-detached house and 19.6% in a terrace, with only 10.9% in a purpose-built flat. Ownership runs high as well: 58.9% owned their home, and 38.0% owned it outright with no mortgage left.
Houses held by the same family for a long time often end up with an extended kitchen, and a bigger kitchen tends to take a bigger cooker: a built-in double in a tower unit, or a 90cm range. The racks, trays and side runners of either come out and are soaked and cleaned separately. Parking in Tokyngton when the stadium has an event
On Brent's parking map almost none of Tokyngton ward is inside a controlled parking zone, so an ordinary weekday has no permit hours to plan around. Stadium days are another matter. From Wigginton Avenue by Stonebridge Park station up to Oakington Manor Drive, most of the ward sits inside the Wembley event day zone, and on residential roads outside a CPZ the restrictions generally run from 10am until midnight. Only residents and businesses with an event day permit may park then; on the main roads to the stadium the hours start at 8am.
