The village centre is a conservation area holding 28 listed buildings, and St Mary's church, Grade II*, has a nave from the 10th century standing under a brick tower added early in the 1500s. The parish marked its millennium in 1990. This is Runnymede, roughly 20 miles west of central London, with the M25 down the western side and the M3 below.
The gravel came out before the rides went in
RMC took gravel from the ground south-east of the village between 1941 and 1970, then flooded the worked-out pits and built a leisure park on them, and Lord Louis Mountbatten formally opened Thorpe Park to the public on 24 May 1979, a 400-acre site put up for about £3 million. It covers 410 acres now with the lakes and back-of-house counted, and it took 1.9 million visitors in 2019. So a good share of this parish holds water or rides rather than kitchens.
A hundred people in fourteen cottages
A government inquiry in 1910 found around a hundred people living in 14 cottages here, paying an average of four shillings a week, with one well giving water the colour of yellow ochre. The village went the other way afterwards. The ward held 2,449 people in 1951 and 5,465 at the 2011 census, and it is the housing built to take that growth that holds most of the ovens: Thorpe Lea, laid out as Egham's southern suburb once the Victorian railway arrived, then post-war and later work around the old core. Not really. Nothing caustic is used indoors and nothing is stripped or sanded, so the work is confined to the appliance itself.
Do you want to plug into my kitchen supply?
No. The tank, the heat and the water travel in the van, and the racks, shelves, trays and side runners go out to it.
