Forty theatres and not many kitchens
Theatreland has around forty venues in it, roughly between Shaftesbury Avenue at the top, the Strand at the bottom, Charing Cross Road on one side and Haymarket on the other, and Shaftesbury Avenue alone carries more theatres than any street in London. We should be straight about what that means. Very few people live in it. The domestic work is the floors above the shopfronts and the serviced flats behind them, and on Great Windmill Street those upper floors are still the modest eighteenth-century houses of three and four storeys, two windows to a floor, that were there before the shops were cut into the ground level.
Small kitchens, hard use
A flat over a shopfront on Archer Street or Denman Street rarely has a full range. It is a single built-under oven and a four-ring hob in a room the width of the staircase. The other pattern is the serviced flat, where the oven is barely used but the grill gets hammered. Either way, a full oven clean off Great Windmill Street starts at £77 for a single and takes about ninety minutes.

Book the morning, not the matinee
Great Windmill Street is about 200 metres of road from Coventry Street up to Brewer Street, with the Windmill Theatre at 17-19 and the Lyric stage door on it, and once a get-out is underway that road is trucks. Mornings are cleaner. Westminster put new on-street pay-to-park and permit charges in from 2 March 2026, and the whole district is inside the Congestion Charge zone at £18 a day since 2 January 2026. We pay both and the price on the phone does not move.
The tank is in the van
Racks, shelves, trays and side runners lift out and soak in a heated tank in the van. The cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand indoors with non-caustic products, the door splits where the design allows it, and the oven is heat-tested before we sign it off. No smell left in a one-room flat.
How do you get the parts down a narrow staircase?
Carefully, and in fewer trips than you would think. The tank never leaves the van, so it is only racks and shelves that move.
Do you clean the theatres themselves?
No. We are a domestic service, so it is the flats and the serviced apartments, not venue kitchens or bars.
Is W1 charged at a higher rate?
No. £77 for a single oven here, the same as anywhere else we cover, with no call-out fee inside the North and South Circular.
