The Rodings are eight villages on the upper River Roding, the largest group in the country to share one name, and they do not sit in a single district but spread around the tripoint where Chelmsford, Uttlesford and Epping Forest meet. The name goes back to an Anglo-Saxon group, the Hrodingas, who settled the valley in the sixth century.
Abbess, Beauchamp, Berners and the rest
The CM5 side covers the southern Rodings near Ongar, Abbess, Beauchamp and Berners Roding, while Aythorpe, High, Leaden, Margaret and White Roding fall under CM6 towards Dunmow. Aythorpe Roding keeps a mid-eighteenth-century post mill, the only surviving windmill in the area, and Leaden Roding sits on the crossroads. The villages are scattered.
Old kitchens down the lanes
The stock out here runs to medieval thatched cottages, timber-framed farmhouses and manor houses down single-track lanes, and Margaret Roding's church of St Margaret of Antioch still has its Norman doorway and a crusader's tomb. Can you find a farm down a single-track lane?
Yes. Give us the village and the nearest landmark when you call and we will find the door.
Will an AGA or range kitchen smell of chemicals after?
It should not. The soaking is done outside in the tank, and indoors we use non-caustic products only.
How long does a two-oven AGA take?
Longer than a domestic oven, so we allow extra time and confirm it when you book.
