From 1691 until his death in 1704 the philosopher John Locke lived at Otes, in High Laver, as the paying guest of Sir Francis Masham, and his brick altar tomb stands outside the south wall of All Saints' church. Otes itself is said to have been pulled down in 1822.
Three small parishes, spread along the lanes
The Lavers are three small parishes between Harlow and Chipping Ongar. Their homes are spread out: farmhouses, cottages and a few short rows along the lanes.
- High Laver
- The largest. Since the 18th century or earlier much of its population has lived on its edges: the south side of Matching Green, Tilegate Green and Threshers Bush. All Saints' church is on the road towards Little Laver, with High Laver Hall just to the north of it.
- Little Laver
- Had fewer than ten households in 1428 and 96 people in 1951. Gosling Hall, near the church, is a timber-framed house probably of the 15th century.
- Magdalen Laver
- Has an unusual number of old timber-framed farmhouses, several on moated sites. Wynters Armourie has a partly aisled hall that probably dates from the 14th century.
The 20th century added some council houses, such as Culvers Cottages, Chalkpit Cottages and Hull Green Cottages in High Laver, and one wartime pair in Magdalen Laver.
Detached houses and farm kitchens in the Lavers
The two census output areas that best fit High Laver and Magdalen Laver (Little Laver has none of its own) had 572 residents in 214 households in 2021. 60.7% of those households lived in a detached house, against 23.1% across Epping Forest district, and 76.5% owned their home. Only 2.8% rented from the council or a housing association.
A range cooker or an AGA is likeliest in a big detached farmhouse. Either is cleaned in two parts: the racks, trays, side runners and fan cover come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, while the cavity and the door glass are degreased by hand, on dust sheets. An AGA has to be switched off the night before, so that it is cool by morning; a two-oven model takes about half a day.

Finding the house on a Laver lane
Many houses here go by a name rather than a number, and a postcode can cover farms some way apart. When you book, give us the house name and the nearest hamlet or landmark, Tilegate Green, Threshers Bush or the church. The team needs somewhere to park close to the kitchen door, on a drive or in a yard.

Either. The green is split between the two parishes, and Matching has its own page; the price does not change.
Our AGA is never switched off. What should we do?
Turn it off the night before the visit so the cast iron can cool. A two-oven AGA is £143 and a four-oven one is £187.
Can you do the extractor hood as well?
Yes. An extractor hood is £28, and the hob or hood of a range cooker is £48.
