The Hyde takes its name from a medieval measure of land, first recorded in 1281, and by the mid-1500s it was a hamlet where the Kingsbury Road met the Edgware Road.
Goldsmith, the brewery and Duple
Oliver Goldsmith lived at Hyde Farm from 1771 to 1774 and wrote She Stoops to Conquer there. James Robb set up Hendon Brewery on the Hendon side of the Edgware Road in the 1850s; it closed in 1959. One of the biggest employers was Duple, from 1925: 800 people made cars that converted into vans, then coaches from 1928, one of them named the Hendonian, until the works shut in 1970. One of the new streets at the Sainsbury's site is called Duple Street.

In 2020 Barnet approved plans to knock down the Hendon Sainsbury's on The Hyde and build a new store with 1,309 homes. St George, part of Berkeley, launched it as Silkstream in May 2022, with 276 homes in the first phase, a 43,000 sq ft Sainsbury's, a 1.5-acre public park and work with the London Wildlife Trust on the Silk Stream, which runs along the edge of the site. Sainsbury's opened the new store on 20 November 2024, and the first residents arrived that month.
Behind the main road the census area round Rookery Way, Rushgrove Avenue and Colin Crescent (Barnet 036A) was mixed in 2021, before Silkstream's first residents arrived: of 775 households, 39.4% lived in purpose-built flats, 29.8% in semis and 23.5% in terraced houses. Over half, 53.4%, owned their home, and 30.3% rented privately.
The two kinds of home tend to mean two kinds of oven. A new flat usually has a built-in single or double fitted into the units. An older semi may have anything, including a range cooker in a kitchen that has been extended at the back.

Either way the racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, while the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand indoors, on dust sheets.

Parking off The Hyde
The team needs somewhere to park, which means a street space close to your home, not a stop on the main road. Yes. A 90cm range is £143, and the hob or hood of a range is £48 on top of that.
Do weekends cost more?
No. We work seven days a week, and a Saturday or Sunday is charged at the weekday price.
