Upper Hale centres on the junction of Deans Lane, Hale Lane and Selvage Lane, and it is known locally as the Green Man, after a pub that stood on the spot from at least the early eighteenth century. Lower Hale sits further along, by Farm Road and the bridge over Deans Brook, and that end is generally counted as Edgware.
The Northern line built this suburb
Until the 1920s The Hale drew day-trippers from central London to its two public houses. Then the Northern line reached Edgware station in 1924, omnibuses began running from there to The Hale and Mill Hill, and the farms at Upper and Lower Hale were sold off and built over across the late 1920s and early 1930s, which is why nearly everything standing here is a private detached or semi-detached house rather than a terrace or a mansion block. The Hale Estate went up on the east side of Selvage Lane.
Interwar semis put the kitchen at the back
A 1930s semi was drawn with a small kitchen against the rear wall, and a great many in NW7 have had that wall pushed out into the garden since. What ends up in the extension is usually a fitted double, or a 90cm range under a hood. A double is £110 and runs to about two hours. Booking an oven clean on the Hale Estate costs the same as one up on The Ridgeway.
Selvage Lane is older than the houses on it
Selvage Lane forms part of an ancient road from Edgware to Totteridge, along with Deans Lane and Marsh Lane. It is narrow in places. The heated tank travels in the van, so the van wants to stand near your door: racks, shelves, trays and side runners go out to soak, while the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand indoors with non-caustic products.

Is The Hale NW7 or HA8?
It straddles the two. The Hale sits on the border of Mill Hill and Edgware, so the Green Man end reads NW7 while Lower Hale is usually treated as Edgware. We work both sides.
Do you have to pull the cooker out?
Only a freestanding range, and only if the sides need doing. A built-in oven is cleaned in place.
Can you clean the extractor over the hob at the same time?

Around ninety minutes, and it is heat-tested at the end rather than left for you to try.
