A hamlet that became suburb between 1924 and 1935
The Hale, or Healh, is on record from about 1294, split into Upper and Lower Hale, and it was the smallest hamlet in Hendon parish, with a handful of houses. Small as it was, by 1914 it had two inns and no other shop. The Green Man, known since 1751, drew bank-holiday crowds until the late 1920s, and Hale station opened at the bottom of Hale Lane in 1906 with trains to Finsbury Park; the line closed to passengers in September 1939.
The farms were sold in the mid-1920s, Stoneyfields in 1924 and Upper and Lower Hale Farms the year after, but building was slow until the end of the decade. The Cannon Brewery rebuilt the Green Man in 1929, shops stood round it by 1930, and by 1935 the whole of The Hale had become suburban streets.

Racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, while the cavity, the fan cover and the door glass are degreased by hand in the kitchen; the door is split where its design allows.
