Thamesmead East is a Bexley ward, and it holds the original Thamesmead that the Greater London Council put up on the marshes in the late 1960s: the Lesnes estate off Yarnton Way, Southmere Lake, and streets around the lake such as Hartslock Drive and Wolvercote Road.

The layout came out of the 1953 flood: the original design put the homes at first-floor level, left the ground floor for garages, and added raised walkways as escape routes. Parking around Yarnton Way and Southmere
The nearest Bexley zone is Abbey Wood Station, around the station: Bexley's table of controlled roads puts it on streets such as Overton Road, Fendyke Road and the east side of Wilton Road, and the council gives its hours as 11am to 1pm on weekdays. Yarnton Way, Hartslock Drive and the Southmere walks are not in the table. Peabody and the council asked residents about parking around the zone in summer 2025, so read the signs on the day.
