In 1911 the Victoria County History of Surrey reported that the older houses of Thames Ditton were "rapidly disappearing to make room for small riverside villas and bungalows". Elmbridge's designation statement for the village, drawing on local directories, puts the fastest growth between 1895 and 1915.
Thames Ditton village centre and Giggs Hill Green
The centre kept its old road pattern, and Surrey County Council made it a conservation area on 31 July 1973. The village centre, round the High Street, is fine-grained: two- and three-storey buildings, some with shops below, and houses, old walls or railings at the back of the pavement. The Grade I listed church of St Nicholas has a tower whose lower part dates from the early 13th century, and the council's design guide counts glimpses of it as part of the village's character.
South of the village, Giggs Hill Green was a low, marshy patch by the River Rythe until it was drained, and cricket has been played on it since 1838. St Leonards Cottages, on its north side, were 18th-century almshouses; the Angel Inn faces what remains of the old Ditton Brewery at the east end. For the streets around the green, the council's design guide singles out the houses in the St Leonards Road area, fronting the green and on the north side of Station Road for their architectural quality. In the lower-density parts it describes larger family homes in large, often mature plots, with parking often on drives screened from the road.
Of the 3,618 households in Thames Ditton ward at the 2021 Census, 79.0% owned their home, 43.3% of all households with a mortgage or loan. One in three (34.1%) lived in a detached house.

Summer Road, where statues were cast
North-west of the High Street, around Summer Road, Warwick Gardens and Wolsey Avenue, detached houses are rare. In the Census area that covers them (Elmbridge 005B), 42.0% of households lived in a semi-detached house in 2021 and just 6.0% in a detached one. Summer Road has an unusual past. Cox and Company built a bronze foundry there in 1874 to cast statues, the Cromwell outside the House of Commons among them, and turned out war memorials after the First World War; production stopped in 1939.

Parking near Thames Ditton village
Elmbridge's Ashley Road car park, close to the village shops, has 66 spaces, with charges from 9am to 6pm, Monday to Saturday. Street parking is controlled by Surrey County Council. In its latest parking review the county dropped a plan for no-waiting restrictions on part of Speer Road in February 2026, after 12 of the 13 responses objected and residents said parking there was already limited. Check the signs on your own road. If there is a drive the van can use, say so when you book.
