Temple Mills is named after water mills of the Knights Templar on the River Lea, which ground corn from their lands in Homerton and on the marshes and stood partly in Hackney and partly in Leyton.
Mills, a wagon works and a Eurostar depot
Temple Mills has long been work ground. On the night before Easter 1690, Peter Pain, a Huguenot refugee, was killed with his family when the gunpowder he was making for the government blew up two of the mills. The Great Eastern Railway opened a wagon works here in 1896 on 23 acres off Temple Mills Lane; it closed in 1983. Since late 2007 a former marshalling yard here has held the £402 million Eurostar depot, a shed of eight tracks just under 450 metres long. The same district had Chobham Farm, a cold store whose picket in July 1972 led to the jailing of the Pentonville Five.
The district sits on the boundary of Newham and Waltham Forest, with a small part in Hackney. The depot and the northern end of Temple Mills Lane are in Waltham Forest's Leyton ward.
Chobham Manor and the Leyton streets
On the Newham side, Chobham Manor, built by a joint venture of London & Quadrant and Taylor Wimpey, has 859 homes, from flats and maisonettes to mews and town houses. Three-quarters were designed for families and 35% are affordable. In the census area that takes in Chobham Manor, 14.0% of the 649 households in 2021 lived in a terraced house and 82.6% in a flat; 36.6% owned, 27.5% rented privately, 27.2% were social renters and 8.5% shared owners.
North, across the boundary, the Waltham Forest streets around Ruckholt Road, Dunedin Road and Oliver Road are mixed. There, 28.6% of 1,074 households had a terraced house in 2021, 43.3% a purpose-built flat and 12.8% a flat in a converted house, while 44.8% rented privately.
A three-to-five-bedroom town house is the sort of kitchen where a double oven or a wider cooker turns up more often than in a one-bed flat. Parking on either side of the boundary
Chobham Manor is in Newham's East Village zone, where permit hours run from 8am to 9pm every day of the week. In Waltham Forest the council says the days and times a zone operates should be shown on signs in the area; in a permit parking area the signs say 'permit holders only past this point', and the streets inside may have no further signs or bay markings.
