Most of the flats sit above shops
Temple Fortune grew as the shopping district for Hampstead Garden Suburb, which started in 1907, and the retail spine went up around Gateway House and the Arcade in about 1911 to Parker and Unwin's designs. What that left is a run of parades along Finchley Road, Temple Fortune Parade, Halleswelle Parade, Ashbourne Parade, with flats on the floors above them. Those addresses are flats far more than houses. First-floor kitchen, a staircase from a street door, no driveway and nowhere obvious to stop. It is a standard oven clean in every technical sense, and the only awkward part is the carry.
Behind the shops it changes completely
Walk two minutes east and the Suburb takes over: proper houses, wider kitchens, ranges rather than a lone built-under single. Bridge Lane, where the Carmelite monastery was founded in 1908, is the sort of boundary you can feel in the appliance list. Finchley Road itself dates from 1827 and still does what it did then, which is carry everything through.

Whatever is legal and close. Barnet runs a Temple Fortune CPZ and added waiting restrictions in the streets around it after the 2020 consultation, so a bay behind the parade is usually better than the Finchley Road frontage.
