The Temple is not run by the City of London. Inner Temple and Middle Temple are liberties, and under the Temples Order 1971 their Sub-Treasurer and Under-Treasurer act as the local authority, with a standing equivalent to an inner London borough council. That matters here for one reason. Nobody drives in without the gate.
Everything comes in through Tudor Street
The only vehicle entrance to the Temple is the Tudor Street gate, manned around the clock, open from six in the morning until midnight. The pedestrian gates at Embankment, Milford Lane, Fleet Street and Devereux run 06.00 to 20.00 Monday to Friday and are shut the rest of the time, so a Saturday job means the van and the technician both come in at Tudor Street and the racks go up King's Bench Walk on foot. Parking inside is by permit and the Inns hold very few spaces.
The flats are the top floors
About a quarter of the chambers buildings across the two Inns still hold residential accommodation, and planning policy is to keep it. Pressure on professional space pushed those sets upwards over the last century, so what survives is mostly top floor, lived in by senior barristers and judges who keep the family home outside London. Mitre Court has chambers, flats and solicitors in one building. The kitchens follow from that. Small, three or four flights up with no lift, one integrated oven used four nights a week by somebody eating alone. Temple is the only place we cover where the customer's landlord is a Treasurer.
How the clean works up four flights
Racks, shelves, trays and side runners come out and soak in the heated tank in the van at the Tudor Street end. The cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased indoors by hand with non-caustic products, so nothing lingers in a set with sash windows painted shut. The dip-tank clean on a King's Bench Walk set takes about ninety minutes. Heat-tested, then signed off.

Before you book
Do we need to arrange access with the Inn?
Tell your porter or the Treasury Office the day before and pass on our van registration. That is usually all the gate wants.
Can you come on a Saturday?
Yes, seven days. Saturdays are easier for the vehicle gate and harder for the pedestrian ones, so we meet you at Tudor Street rather than at Devereux.
Is there a charge for coming in to the City?
No. Temple is well inside the North and South Circular, so no call-out fee. A single oven is £77 here and £77 in Ealing.
