The hill was Plowed Garlic Hill before it was Telegraph Hill, and it got the name from a semaphore station put on the summit around 1795, one of the relay points that flashed news of Waterloo up to London before the whole thing was dismantled in 1823. The tennis courts in the upper park sit on that ground now. Kitto Road splits the park in two, the lower half holding the ponds, the playground and the memorial to Olaudah Equiano, and the London County Council opened the ten acres to the public in 1895.
A Haberdashers estate, since divided
The Worshipful Company of Haberdashers laid this out from 1871 under rules strict enough to keep the whole estate looking like one idea, and it worked: Erlanger, Pepys and Jerningham Roads are still lined with semis of near-identical design, paired central front doors, canted bays running the full height, hipped slate roofs. Those are large houses. Plenty are now two or three flats each, which is why one address on the Hill can mean a lower-ground kitchen with a 60cm built-under, and the address next door a family kitchen with a double in a rear extension.
The rental churn runs on the academic year
Goldsmiths sits just north in New Cross with a little under 1,100 rooms in its halls, so most of its students rent from the surrounding SE14 and SE4 stock, and the checkout inventory on those lets almost always names the oven.
