John Rocque's map of about 1740 marks the hill as Plow'd Garlic Hill. Its present name comes from a semaphore station put on the top in 1795, one of the Admiralty's chain between London, Deal and Dover, which carried the news of Waterloo in 1815.
The Haberdashers' estate, built from 1871
The Haberdashers' Company owned the hill but left it undeveloped until the 1870s, probably because it was steep. Its surveyor, William Snooke, advised wide, tree-lined streets of good houses, and the first terrace went up in 1871. Over the next 30 years or so the estate filled with two standard house types, two and three storeys high, along with Aske's boys' school (1875), the girls' school at the bottom of Jerningham Road (1891), St Catherine's church (1894) and the ten-acre park, opened in 1895 and split by Kitto Road into Upper and Lower Park.
Lewisham made it a conservation area in 1990. It covers about 200 acres and some 2,600 buildings, and almost all the 19th-century houses survive; the main gaps are wartime bomb sites in Ommaney Road and Erlanger Road, rebuilt as flats late in the 20th century.
Family houses divided into flats
The houses were built for one family each. The council's 2008 appraisal notes that many are now divided into flats or student accommodation, and the 2021 Census bears it out. In the area the House of Commons Library calls Telegraph Hill, 32.5% of the 3,458 households lived in part of a converted or shared house, about twice the Lewisham figure of 16.3%. Private renters were 29.2%, owners 34.6% and social renters 34.1%.
In a three-storey house cut into flats, the kitchen can be anywhere from the lower ground floor to the top. The appraisal also points out that the estate was laid out with no back lanes or service roads. Racks, trays, side runners and fan cover come out and are soaked and cleaned separately; the cavity and door glass are degreased by hand in the kitchen.

Parking on the Hill
Lewisham's zone table, dated January 2026, lists no controlled parking zone for Telegraph Hill. In 2024 the council asked Brockley and Telegraph Hill residents about parking, and the controls approved afterwards were for four roads in Brockley ward: Harcourt, Harefield, Geoffrey and Foxberry Roads, still to go through a statutory consultation. Rules can change, so check the signs at the end of your road and tell us the street when you book; the team needs somewhere to park. Where does the cleaning happen?
The racks, trays, side runners and fan cover come out and are soaked and cleaned separately. The cavity and door glass are cleaned by hand, normally in your kitchen. Some teams use a heated tank when they can park close; otherwise everything is done in the kitchen. The price is the same either way, and you can ask when you book.
I let rooms to students. Can the agent deal with it?
