The council's conservation area statement dates Teddington Lock and weir to 1812, and says the footbridge from the Middlesex bank over Swan Ait to the Surrey side was finished in 1888 to replace a ferry.
Ferry Road and the riverside by the lock
Ferry Road, which runs from the High Street down to the river, keeps the character of the old village. The council's statement for the Teddington Lock conservation area describes modest two-storey cottages and larger later Victorian semis behind small front gardens, with a timber boathouse at the river end. Peg Woffington's Cottages and Oak Lodge, where Ferry Road meets the High Street, are 18th-century cottages and the earliest domestic buildings left in the conservation area. North of the lock, larger blocks of flats built from the late 20th century onwards now face the Thames.
Ferry Road has its own parking zone, Z2, and it is permit-only from 8.30am to 10pm every day, bank holidays included. There is no free window there for the van, so a visit needs a visitor permit or a bay on a nearby street; tell us the house number when you book.

Edwardian Teddington behind the High Street
The railway came in 1863, and the High Street grew fast after it. In 1903 the street was widened for the tramway, and three-storey Edwardian shopping parades went up along its south side. Further east, a country estate called The Manor was demolished and built over in the early 20th century with larger Edwardian houses, now Manor Road and Cambridge Road. In 1955, a larger house on their corner was demolished for a short run of houses by Eric Lyons, Nos. 36 to 54 Cambridge Road and 50 to 56 Manor Road. Watts Lane, off the High Street, keeps a row of small terraced cottages.
One of the larger Edwardian houses here may have a family kitchen with a double oven or a range cooker. A double takes about two hours, and a 90cm range two to three. The south side of the town backs onto Bushy Park.

I live on Ferry Road. Do I need to give you a permit?
Yes, if the van is to park on Ferry Road: Zone Z2 runs every day until 10pm. With a visitor permit the van can stand near the door.
Can you clean an AGA in one of the bigger houses?
Yes. A two-oven AGA is £143 and takes about half a day; switch it off the night before so it is cool when we arrive.
Is the whole clean done in my kitchen?
Most of it. The cavity, fan cover and door glass are cleaned by hand there, and the racks, trays and side runners come out to be soaked and cleaned separately. Before the team leaves, the oven is put back together, heated and checked with you.
