In the middle of the 19th century the centre of Sydenham moved west, from Bell Green to the junction of Kirkdale and Westwood Hill, partly because of the new station at the west end of Sydenham Road.
Sydenham Road from Cobb's Corner to the station
That junction is a roundabout now and the heart of the Cobb's Corner conservation area, which Lewisham designated in 2007. Its landmarks are the former Cobb's department store, built in 1902, and the Greyhound pub, part of the development that followed the Crystal Palace's move to Sydenham in 1854. North and north-west of the roundabout are Victorian and Edwardian terraces and semis, with the tall terraces of Peak Hill Gardens among them.
The west end of Sydenham Road was the fashionable end until 1877, when the Newlands estate was sold to the British Land Company, which built the first intensive development of small houses there. Lewisham's appraisal of the Sydenham Thorpes dates the shift from large villas to terraces and semis from that sale.
Lodgings, bombsites and the flats that followed
The Thorpes appraisal also says Sydenham's fortunes declined between the wars, particularly after the Crystal Palace burned down in 1936, and that many large houses became lodgings. Houses that fell empty after wartime bombing were often requisitioned by the council for conversion or earmarked for redevelopment; bombsites and derelict homes made prime sites for blocks of flats, and several council estates grew up in the Sydenham and Forest Hill areas in the 1950s and 60s.
It shows in the census. In the area round the station, Silverdale and the west end of Sydenham Road (Lewisham 033E), 46.6% of the 794 households lived in a purpose-built block in 2021 and another 23.7% in a converted or shared house; only 21.1% had a house to themselves. A third (33.2%) rented privately and 35.4% from the council or a housing association.
A flat cut out of a big Victorian house can have its kitchen two or three floors up, with a built-in single or a slim freestanding cooker. Racks, trays, side runners and fan cover come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, while the cavity and door glass are degreased by hand in the kitchen.

No permit zone in Sydenham yet
On Lewisham's parking map the nearest controlled zone is C, at Forest Hill station; Sydenham itself has none. Sydenham was one of the areas in the council's 2025 Sustainable Streets consultation, which closed on 16 June 2025, and the council says it is still analysing the replies, so check the signs on your street. The team needs somewhere to park; the name of the nearest side road helps.
