Sydenham Hill splits cleanly in two for a cooker job, and the ridge along Dulwich Wood is roughly where the line falls. On the SE21 and Dulwich side the big Victorian villas built from the 1850s, put up after the Crystal Palace moved here, tend to hold the range cookers and the two-oven AGAs. On the SE26 side and down on the Kingswood Estate, the 1950s council blocks off Seeley Drive run built-under single ovens instead. We book both in the same week.

- The cast-iron ovens and hotplates are cleaned in place by hand; the enamel and lids come up without caustic fumes indoors.
The cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand with non-caustic products, so there is no chemical smell left in a house you may have to sell or let. The oven is heat-tested and signed off before we leave. An AGA is a slower job than a fan oven, and we allow for that on the day.
Parking on Sydenham Hill itself is easier than the Dulwich terraces, since many of these houses have their own drive or a wide verge, so the van and the tank sit close to the door.
