The Swiss Cottage tavern stood at the point where Finchley Road and Avenue Road meet by 1841, and the junction is still named after it.
Swiss Cottage has had no ward of its own since 2022, when Swiss Cottage ward was abolished and its area shared between neighbouring wards, mainly Primrose Hill and South Hampstead. Swiss Cottage flats of 1938, 1961 and the late 1960s
The whole site between Finchley Road and Avenue Road was rebuilt with an Odeon cinema in 1937 and, after 1938, the Regency Lodge flats by R. Atkinson. Centre Heights, a concrete and glass block of shops, offices and flats by Douglas Stephen and Panos Koulermos, went up on the west side of Finchley Road in 1961.
East along Adelaide Road are the Chalcots towers. Work started at the west end in 1965 on blocks of 23 storeys, designed by Dennis Lennon and Partners and named Taplow, Burnham, Bray and Dorney after villages near Eton, with a smaller 19-storey block, Blashford, further east. Together they hold over 700 flats, and Camden Council owns them.
The small Census area around the station and the library (the ONS calls it Camden 017C) shows what that building history left: 83.6% of its 827 households lived in a purpose-built block in 2021, and only 3.1% in a converted house.
In a tower or a larger block of flats there is usually a lift, and the kitchen was planned as a kitchen, often since refitted with a built-in single or double oven. Even on the 20th floor of a tower the method is the same: the racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand in the flat, on dust sheets.

Private renting around the station

- CA-B, Belsize: the library, Winchester Road and the Chalcots towers, 9am to 6.30pm on weekdays and 9.30am to 1.30pm on Saturdays
- CA-R(b), Swiss Cottage: Finchley Road up by the O2 Centre, 8.30am to 10pm Monday to Saturday
A Saturday afternoon or a Sunday falls outside the controls in the first two, and weekends cost the weekday price. Camden's visitor permits are for residents' own guests, while tradespeople come under the trade permit, so tell us the block and the side of Finchley Road when you call.

I live high up in one of the Chalcots towers. Can you still clean the oven?
Yes. The cavity, fan cover and door glass are cleaned by hand in your flat, whatever the floor. Tell us the floor and the tower when you book.
How long does a double oven take?
About two hours. A single takes about 90 minutes and a 90cm range two to three hours.
Can the extractor over the hob be cleaned as well?
Yes. An extractor hood is £28 and a microwave is £22.
Do you cover Primrose Hill too?
