In August 2026 the A226 Galley Hill Road was still shut between Swanscombe High Street and Snowden Hill in Northfleet. It closed after part of the edge of Swanscombe Quarry collapsed on 10 April 2023 and damaged the road above.
Getting to Swanscombe with Galley Hill Road shut
A temporary closure order came into force on 23 November 2024 for up to 36 months, according to the town council's updates. In April 2026 the BBC reported that repairs could cost as much as £50m, with a new bridge or a reinforced earth retaining wall being designed, and no reopening date given. In August 2026 Kent County Council bid to the government's Structures Fund for the repair, with an answer expected in the autumn.
The closure changes the drive, so give us your street when you book. Dartford Council's permit parking schemes page names roads in Dartford, Greenhithe and Darenth but none in Swanscombe; yellow lines and the signs on your road still apply. What the team needs is a legal place to park near the door.
Terraced streets ringed by chalk pits
In 1868 Swanscombe was still mostly farmland, with hop gardens and oast houses around Swanscombe Street and Milton Street. Then Swanscombe Manor, the land south of Swanscombe Street with much more to the east and north, was sold to Thomas Bevan, one of the cement makers. Over the next century most of it was dug out for chalk and clay, leaving the town edged by large chalk pits and cliffs.
Many of the houses that grew up between the pits are terraces. In the census area around Southfleet Road, Coopers Road and Stanhope Road, 56.8% of the 794 households lived in a terraced house in 2021. Across Swanscombe ward, 28.3% of its 2,745 households rented from the council or a housing association, 21.3% rented privately and 49.5% owned their home.
Terraced houses often have a narrow kitchen at the back, with a freestanding cooker or a built-in single. About half the ward's households rent, and when a tenancy ends the oven is one of the things the landlord or the inventory clerk checks. No theme park on the Swanscombe Peninsula
Natural England notified the peninsula north of the town as a Site of Special Scientific Interest in March 2021 and confirmed it in November 2021. The London Resort application for a theme park there was withdrawn on 29 March 2022, and the High Court made a winding-up order against London Resort Company Holdings on 17 January 2025. The big building programme nearby is the garden city at Ebbsfleet, next door.
