Galley Hill Road has been shut since a chalk cliff gave way in April 2023, and a temporary closure order came into force on 23 November 2024 with an estimated life of up to 36 months, so Kent County Council is still weighing a bridge against a land embankment for a fix costed at roughly £50m. Cement built the town, then left it
Between 1840 and 1930 this was the largest cement plant in Britain, and Blue Circle Industries worked here until 1990. What that leaves is workers' terraces and post-war infill rather than period villas, which means compact kitchens and built-under or freestanding single ovens more often than anything else. The quarrying is also why Barnfield Pit started giving up the Swanscombe skull from 1935, around 400,000 years old and the earliest human remains known from England. The theme park is not happening
The London Resort was a £2.5bn scheme for the Swanscombe Peninsula. Its application was withdrawn in March 2022, the company went into administration in 2023, and a High Court judge ordered London Resort Company Holdings into liquidation in January 2025. Natural England had already notified the peninsula as a Site of Special Scientific Interest. Housing growth here now comes from the Ebbsfleet Valley scheme instead, where new-build kitchens run to integrated ovens behind a cabinet door.
