Surbiton station, the Art Deco building on Victoria Road, dates from 1937, almost a century after Thomas Pooley, a Cornishman who owned a local malthouse, began laying out a new town beside the railway.

The New Town streets round Claremont Road

Pooley laid out the first phase between 1838 and 1842. After that the bankers Coutts and Company took over, with the architect Philip Hardwick and the builders Cubitts, and filled the streets with stuccoed villas and terraces in the Regency manner; the council's conservation pages list survivors on the north side of Victoria Road, the east sides of Claremont Road and St Philip's Road. Later came St Andrew's Square, three sides of Gothic brick terraces put up between 1876 and 1884 by the local developers Corbett and McClymont. The council calls it the only traditional Victorian square in the borough.

Not every big Victorian villa has stayed a single house: the council's character study notes that many of the large villas on St Mark's Hill are now subdivided.

St Mark's and Seething Wells, the ward that covers the station and the river, had 5,341 households at the 2021 Census, more than any other ward in Kingston. Of those, 40.4% rented from a private landlord or a letting agent.

Riverside flats on the Portsmouth Road

Portsmouth Road was the old turnpike from London. Between 1840 and 1866 villas went up along its river side, and blocks of flats have since replaced them. William Woods laid out Queen's Promenade in 1852-54, and the Victorian waterworks buildings at Seething Wells are now student rooms for Kingston University. A riverside flat is likely to have a fitted kitchen with a built-in oven, and the racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately. The cavity, fan cover and door glass are cleaned by hand in the flat, on dust sheets.

Zone S around the station

Most of the streets on this page are in Kingston's Zone S: Victoria Road, Brighton Road, Claremont Road, St Mark's Hill, St Andrew's Road, St Philip's Road, part of Maple Road, and Portsmouth Road from Brighton Road to the Elmbridge boundary. The council's hours page gives the central area as Monday to Saturday, 8am to 6.30pm, and the outer area as weekdays only, while Cottage Grove is for resident permit holders every day from 8am to 10.30pm. The signs on your road give the hours that apply. The team needs somewhere to park, so give us the street when you book.

Surbiton oven cleaning questions

I rent a flat off Victoria Road and move out soon. Can the bill go to the agent?

Yes. The invoice can be made out to the agency, photos can be taken for the checkout file, and keys for an empty flat can be picked up by arrangement.

My flat is on the top floor of a split villa. Is that a problem?

No. Mention the floor when you ring.

Do you clean range cookers in the bigger villas?

Yes. A 90cm range is £143 and takes 2 to 3 hours; the range cooker cleaning page explains the visit.

What should I do before you arrive?

Leave the oven off so it is cool, and clear a path to the door. The guide on preparing for your oven clean has the rest.

Said after the sign-off

Very satisfied with the service. They were slightly late at first but I got a call from customer service to let me know, and it was all fine. The oven man, as he called himself, arrived and worked very hard for a couple of hours. My oven now looks like it has never been used.

JoanaTW13

Arrived promptly and did a great job cleaning the oven, hob and extractor. They look like new now and for a very reasonable price too.

HelenSW4

Nice hardworking lads that always do a good job. We used them for our old flat when moving out and for the new one now, both jobs were done very professionally. My wife is very impressed with the results and would recommend them to friends and family.
