Until 1924 the road now called Streatham Vale was a muddy, rutted track carrying on from Greyhound Lane, known as Lonesome Laine. By 1928 nearly 2,000 houses had gone up along it and off it, the first of them in Aberfoyle Road.
The 1920s estate R. H. Miller built
R. H. Miller built the Vale from Abercairn Road to Eardley Road. According to the residents' association's history, most buyers were first-time buyers who had saved since the First World War and took a mortgage to reach the £500 or so a house cost. Cooking and lighting were by gas, and with no domestic fridges every house had a ventilated larder. A photograph of Glenister Park Road from about 1925 shows terraces down both sides before the road was surfaced.
The terraces are still most of it. In the Census area the House of Commons Library calls Streatham Vale, 62.9% of 2,543 households lived in a terraced house in 2021 and only 9.4% in a purpose-built block of flats; 53.8% owned their home.
A 1920s terrace was planned round a small kitchen with a larder and a gas cooker. Many have since been knocked through or extended at the back, which is where a built-in double or a wider cooker tends to go; an unaltered kitchen is more likely to have a 60cm freestanding cooker or a built-in single. Either way the racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity, the fan cover and the door glass are degreased by hand in the kitchen.
Lambeth, Merton and the borough line
Streatham Vale was part of Wandsworth until 1965, when a boundary change moved it to the new London Borough of Lambeth. South of the Lambeth streets the borough line runs into Merton: roads such as Juniper Gardens and Lacrosse Way are in Merton's Longthornton ward. Parking and the paused Streatham Vale zones
Lambeth's 2025 consultation judged parking pressure in the Vale significant and likely to get worse, pointing to large new housing developments, cars pushed out of zones nearby and widespread parking on the pavement. In August 2025 it approved two zones, Streatham Vale North (X) and Streatham Vale South (Y), both noon to 2pm on weekdays and expected to start on 1 December 2025. On 17 November 2025 the council paused the scheme while it reviews its capital spending, saying it would not be put in during the 2025-26 financial year. In October 2026 the project page lists nothing after that update.
