From Streatham High Road to its top, the Common climbs 140 feet. Lambeth's 1994 report counted 68 acres including the Rookery gardens, which stand on the site of a grand house and the old mineral wells and which the London County Council opened to the public in 1913.
Houses on Streatham Common South
Streatham Common South began as a 17th-century track from the High Road to the mineral wells at the Rookery, and the Metropolitan Board of Works planted its trees after taking over the Common in 1883. There is no through traffic. Lambeth's 2017 appraisal describes a small group of early 19th-century houses near the bottom, then mostly Edwardian and interwar detached and semi-detached houses on wider, deeper plots than the north side; No. 9, from the late 18th century, has a couchant lion at each end of its parapet. Copley Park, Braxted Park and Covington Way run south from here into the Streatham Lodge conservation area, designated in 2009 for its late 19th and early 20th century houses.
In the small Census area along this side of the Common, 53.2% of 523 households lived in a semi-detached house at the 2021 Census, and 79.1% of its households owned their home. Across the wider Streatham Common area, by contrast, 30.2% of households lived in part of a converted or shared house.
A family semi that has had its kitchen extended is the usual home for a double oven or a 90cm range. The racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand indoors, with dust sheets down first.
The north side, Henry Tate Mews and the flats
Streatham Common North side was once a lane from Streatham to Knight's Hill. Going uphill there are mostly late 19th-century detached and semi-detached houses, then lower interwar houses past Valley Hill Road. Near the crest is Henry Tate Mews: Park Hill, an 1829 stucco villa later owned by the sugar refiner Henry Tate, was St Michael's Convent from 1923 to 2000 and was then converted into homes, with new houses built in the grounds.
After the war many of Streatham's larger houses, some of them alongside the Common, were divided into flats. A flat on one floor of an old villa usually has a compact kitchen with a built-in single, and the tenancy will often end with an inventory check, so letting agents can have the invoice in the agency's name.

Parking around the Common
Lambeth's 2017 appraisal notes that vehicle crossovers into front gardens have cost on-street parking spaces, and that front gardens given over to parking are a particular problem on the north side.
