Strawberry Hill takes its name from the house Horace Walpole bought in 1747 and turned into his Gothic villa; St Mary's University has stood on land that belonged to the house since the 1920s, with the campus entrance on Waldegrave Road.

The station opened in 1873, and plots on the estate were sold for building from the 1880s. Waldegrave Park, which runs from Waldegrave Road down to Strawberry Vale, between Teddington and Twickenham, was laid out after an auction of plots in 1883; seventy-five houses were planned and the scheme was never finished, but the north side keeps a run of large, individually designed two-and-a-half-storey houses in red brick and terracotta. Strawberry Hill Road and Waldegrave Gardens, the two curving avenues between Tower Road and Waldegrave Road, were built up from the 1880s in a similar red-brick style. The council's statements for the two conservation areas say that in the 20th century some of these houses were pulled down for cul-de-sacs, smaller plots and blocks of flats, and others were converted to flats.
