Two kinds of kitchen, a few streets apart
St Mary's University has over 5,000 students on a 35-acre campus on Waldegrave Road, inside the grounds of Horace Walpole's gothic villa, and that single fact shapes half our year here. The shared houses around Waldegrave Park and Clive Road are let by the room. Their cookers are freestanding, elderly, and cleaned once a year whether they need it or not.
The other Strawberry Hill is the one with the big houses. Larger detached and semi-detached stock, professional owners, kitchens extended into the garden, and a proper cooker at the end of it. We see more range cookers in the big Waldegrave Road houses than anywhere else in TW2, and the odd two-oven AGA on the roads backing onto the golf course, which opened in 1900 and still sets the shape of the streets around it.
Late summer is when the student lets land
Tenancies around the campus mostly end in June or run to September, so the end-of-tenancy oven work here arrives in a heap rather than spread through the year. If you are a landlord with a house on Clive Road, book early in that window. By the last fortnight of August we are turning people away, and a check-out clerk will not accept a grill pan that has been wiped rather than dipped.

Questions from Strawberry Hill
Can you clean a student house oven that has not been touched all year?
Yes, and we do plenty. Carbonised racks go in the heated tank in the van and soak as long as they need. The cavity is done by hand indoors with non-caustic products.
Do you charge more for an AGA?
A two-oven AGA is £143 and takes longer than a conventional double. It has to be off and cold before we start, so most people switch it off the night before.
Will the parking permit be a problem?
Not usually. Zone SH is only enforced 10am to 4.30pm on weekdays, so an early slot or a weekend one solves it. Otherwise we sort it between us when we arrive.
