In September 1997 Brent Council gave outline planning permission to pull down the Stonebridge estate's tower blocks and build about 1,604 houses and flats on both sides of Hillside, none of them more than four storeys high.
From tower blocks to ordinary streets either side of Hillside
The towers were barely thirty years old by then. Brent's archive history of Stonebridge records a post-war plan to clear 98 acres for 2,169 high-rise homes; the first blocks opened in 1967, and by 1977 the estate was known for broken lifts. A Housing Action Trust ran it from 1994 until it was dissolved on 30 September 2007. Since 2004 Hyde and its resident-led subsidiary, Hillside Housing Trust, have carried on the rebuild, which Hyde puts at 1,850 homes when finished, 1,100 of them at social rent. The last phases are near the station on the Harlesden side: 109 homes at Emerald Gardens and 178 on Winchelsea Road.
Whether the cooker is a freestanding one or a single oven built in under the worktop, it gets the same treatment. Racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity, the fan cover and the door glass are degreased by hand indoors, on dust sheets.
Brent's highest share of social renting
At the 2021 Census, 55.8% of the 7,242 households in Stonebridge ward rented from the council or a housing association. No other ward in Brent came close: Roundwood, to the north-east, was second at 41.3%. Another 22.8% rented privately and 17.7% owned their home, and 56.8% of households lived in a purpose-built block of flats.

Older houses on Fawood Avenue
A few older homes survive among the new ones. Brent's archive notes 1930s semi-detached houses still standing on Fawood Avenue, which is named after the local historian F. A. Wood, and says houses were built on Melville and Barry roads in the 1880s and 1890s. In a 1930s semi the cooker could be a built-in double or a 90cm range; say which when you book, as a range takes two to three hours.

Parking for the van around Hillside
On the zone map Brent publishes (last updated September 2024), the rebuilt streets south of Hillside, such as Johnson Road, Windrush Road and Shakespeare Road, are outside any controlled parking zone. Winchelsea Road and Knatchbull Road are in zone HS, which Brent's list of zones gives as 8am to 6.30pm, Monday to Saturday. Most of Hillside, and Melville Road and Sapphire Road to the north of it, have no weekday zone but are inside the Wembley event day zone, where on a stadium event day only permit holders may park, generally from 10am to midnight on residential streets.

Can you come on a Wembley event day?
Only if the van can park legally. North of Hillside that means one of your event day permits; around Johnson Road and Windrush Road, Brent's map shows no event day zone. A day with no event is simpler, and the price is the same any day of the week.
How long does a built-in single take?
About 90 minutes, and a double about two hours. The oven is put back together and heated, and you look inside before we pack up.
What do you need from me on the day?
Someone to let us in, a working socket, and the oven cool when we arrive. For an empty rental, keys can be collected from the landlord or agent by arrangement.
