In 1821 the Pulteney estate, 60 acres between Church Street and Newington Green, was put up for sale in plots along Green Lanes and two roads that existed only on paper: Albion Road and Clissold Crescent.
Streets laid out from 1821 onwards
Thomas Cubitt bought seven plots, mostly on either side of the northern part of Albion Road, started building at the north end in 1823 and kept the road up himself until the vestry adopted it in 1837. At the Green Lanes end of Church Street, Benjamin Massey had built Newington Hall and two houses beside it, called Paradise Place, by 1829. By 1836 three houses were standing beside the New River, the northern part of what was named Aden Terrace in 1839.
East of Albion Road is Albert Town. The National Freehold Land Society bought the land in 1849 and had laid out the streets, named after poets, by 1852; Milton Grove and Shakspeare Walk are two of them. Fifty-three builders worked on it in the 1850s; the busiest, James Witcombe of Islington, put up 35 houses, and many built only one. Terraces followed on the east side of Green Lanes in the 1860s, down as far as Aden Grove.
Those houses are now a mix of whole homes and flats. In Clissold ward, which takes in Albion Road, Albert Town and part of Green Lanes, 52.1% of households lived in purpose-built flats at the 2021 Census, 23.2% in part of a converted house and 17.3% in a terraced house of their own. Owners were the largest group: 36.7% of households owned their home, against 32.2% renting from a social landlord and 29.1% renting privately.
That mix affects the cooker. A flat cut out of a Victorian house usually has a small kitchen with a built-in single, while a house still in one piece has room for a double oven or a range.

Parking in zone M (Clissold)
Most of these streets are in Hackney's zone M. The council's zone list gives its hours as 8.30am to 6.30pm on weekdays and 8.30am to 1.30pm on Saturdays. On Emirates Stadium event days the weekday hours run to 8.30pm, Saturdays to 4.30pm, and Sundays and bank holidays are controlled from midday to 4.30pm. Part of the zone, listed as M var, runs to 8.30pm Monday to Saturday, so read the plate on the bay.
