In Stock village, in Chelmsford district, the old marketplace was built over: The Square, the island block by the crossroads of the High Street, Mill Road and Back Lane, fills what was an open market beside the common, and the appraisal finds nothing in that infill that can be dated earlier than about the 17th century.
Listed cottages around The Square
The conservation area was designated in 1969 and enlarged in 1991 to take in The Common. The appraisal that Chelmsford City Council and Stock Parish Council commissioned in 2019 counts about 36 listed buildings in it, mostly dated to the 18th or early 19th century, when the village seems to have prospered and built or rebuilt in brick. Some are older than their fronts suggest. The Bear and Bellmans are H-plan houses of the 16th century or earlier, and 52 High Street probably began as a late 15th-century cross-wing. Weatherboarding, once more common in the village, survives at The Hoop and at 51-53 High Street.
Kitchens in houses of that age are often small and fitted wherever the old walls allow, which is a general point about period cottages. None of that changes the method. Dust sheets go down, the racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity, the fan cover and the door glass are done by hand in the kitchen.
Parking is the harder part. The appraisal found that most properties in The Square have no off-street space, that parked cars line its roadsides, and that the only public car park, by the village hall at the far end of the village, does not allow overnight parking. In 2019 there were no parking restrictions anywhere in the conservation area. Rules can change, so check the signs, and tell us when you book if the van may have to stand some way from the door.
Post-war houses off Mill Road
For centuries the village hardly grew. Comparing the early Ordnance Survey maps, the appraisal finds little change until after the Second World War, when Mill Road, and to a lesser extent Back Lane, began to be built up; a population long around 600 rose to just over 2,000 in the later 20th century. Much of the old Stock Common either side of Mill Road is now low-density suburban housing, and the road is named after the windmill to the east.
Most of the parish owns its home. At the 2021 Census, 733 of the 947 households in Stock parish were owners or shared owners, and the rest split evenly between social renting and private renting (or living rent free), 107 households each.
Post-war family houses often end up with a built-in double after a kitchen refit; that is a general pattern, so say what yours is when you call. A double oven clean takes about two hours, both cavities by hand and both sets of shelves soaked and cleaned separately.
