St Dunstan and All Saints, the Grade I parish church on Stepney High Street, once served a parish that covered most of today's Tower Hamlets. Its churchyard was opened for public recreation in 1887, and it is still a public park.
Terraces of the Mercers' estate, 1823 to 1843
Most of the land around here was owned by the Mercers' Company, which is why the terraces south of the church are called the Mercers' estate. The surveyor George Smith drew up the street plan in 1823, and building was largely finished by 1828. The houses are narrow and flat-fronted, in brick, and the terraces on Bromley Street and Belgrave Street, beside the churchyard, have stuccoed lower storeys and date from 1829 to 1843; several are listed Grade II. Durham Row, on the church's northern side, has another listed run at Nos. 3 to 19.
Houses this narrow were built long before fitted kitchens, so any cooker in one came with a later refit. Whatever it is, the racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand.
A synagogue turned into flats
North of the church, on Rectory Square, the East London Synagogue was built in 1876 to 1877 to designs by H D Davis and E Emanuel. It closed in 1993 and was converted into flats in the mid-1990s, now called Temple Court; much of the ark, the plaques and the tiling survive inside. The building is listed Grade II.
Most households around the church live in purpose-built flats. In St Dunstan's ward, 71.7% of households did so at the 2021 Census, and only 17.0% had a terraced house. Of the 4,840 households, 50.1% rented from a social landlord (22.1% from the council, 27.9% from another social landlord), 26.8% rented privately and 17.6% owned.

Parking in Stepney: council zone C3
The streets around St Dunstan's, Rectory Square and Stepney High Street are in sub-zone C3 of the council's zone C. Tower Hamlets lists C3 as controlled from 8.30am to 5.30pm, Monday to Friday, so on a weekday the team needs a bay, and at the weekend the zone's controls are off. Weekend visits are charged at the weekday price. Commercial Road, along the southern side of the Mercers' estate, is part of the red-route network.
