The name Canning Town was first used for a small patch north of Barking Road, between the Lea and the railway. In 1851 it meant some 60 houses in Stephenson Street, Wharf Street and Wharf Place.
Star Lane, from field track to DLR stop
The lane is older than the town. Maps by Rocque and James show Star Lane running west from Forty Acre Lane, and it led to a field called Star field. The railway under the station came in 1846, when the Eastern Counties and Thames Junction line opened from Stratford to Canning Town. Later there were four tracks here: the Jubilee line took the western pair in 1999; the eastern pair carried the North London Line until it was cut back in 2006 and handed to the DLR. Star Lane station, an island platform under a footbridge between West Ham and Canning Town, opened on 31 August 2011.
Terraced streets east of the line, towers on Manor Road
East of the railway, Star Lane runs past Star Primary School into streets that are mostly houses. At the 2021 Census the area around them had 592 households, and 52.6% of its households lived in a terraced house; with semis and detached houses added, about three households in four lived in a whole house, and only 22.6% lived in a purpose-built flat. Social renting was the biggest tenure at 40.2%, most of it from the council (30.6% of all households). Another 32.3% rented privately and 25.8% owned.
Those figures were counted before the towers. Manor Road Quarter, being built by the English Cities Fund on a former retail park near Canning Town station, is planned at 804 homes of up to three bedrooms, half of them affordable at London Affordable Rent or for shared ownership. Phase one has 355 homes in three buildings, the tallest 32 storeys, and the scheme runs on air source heat pumps with no gas. The postcodes issued around 300 Manor Road from April 2024 onwards fall in the same census area.
So the street decides the kitchen. A rented terraced house is more likely to have a freestanding cooker, while a flat in a gas-free tower has an electric hob, usually with a built-in oven. Either way, the racks, trays, side runners and fan cover come out and are soaked and cleaned separately; the cavity and the door glass are degreased by hand indoors, on dust sheets.

Parking on each side of the railway
The DLR line splits two of Newham's zones here. East of the line, Star Lane and the Manor Road Quarter blocks are in Canning Town North, introduced in August 2017, where permits are needed from 10am to 2pm on weekdays only. Stephenson Street and Wharf Street, west of the line, are in the Canning Town zone, controlled from 8am to 6.30pm Monday to Saturday. The hours are on the council's zone table. On the public streets east of the line, a weekend visit avoids controlled hours entirely, at the weekday price.

Very satisfied with the service. They were slightly late at first but I got a call from customer service to let me know, and it was all fine. The oven man, as he called himself, arrived and worked very hard for a couple of hours. My oven now looks like it has never been used.
