Stapleford Aerodrome, code EGSG, opened in 1933 as the Essex Aerodrome and is still a working general aviation airfield in the Epping Forest district near Abridge, its licence held by Herts and Essex Aero Club Limited. The postal address is Stapleford Tawney, Romford, RM4 1SJ. It is an airfield, so be clear about what this page is: there is no housing estate here, no high street, and no rows of kitchens.
What is actually on the site
Hillman's Airways flew from here to Paris and other European cities in De Havilland Dragon and Dragon Rapide biplanes, and Amy Johnson was one of its pilots. The RAF requisitioned it as RAF Stapleford Tawney, a satellite station for RAF North Weald by the end of March 1940. A V-2 rocket landed in the middle of the airfield on 20 November 1944 and left a crater 60 feet across; another hit the camp site on 23 January 1945, killing 17 people. Edgar Percival built 40 of his EP9 crop-sprayers here from 1955. Stapleford Flight Centre, family-run and founded in 1969, runs the place today, with runways on 03/21, a grass strip on 10/28, and a licensed clubhouse and restaurant.
The housing is scattered, not clustered
Not on the apron. The parish around the perimeter is farmland and scattered houses rather than streets, and the ovens we get called to in this corner of RM4 sit in cottages and farmhouses down the lanes, often a good distance from the next one. That suits the method. Everything removable soaks in the heated tank in the van, so a full oven clean needs no water, no sink and no power from your kitchen, which matters more than usual when the property is old and the utility room is somebody's back porch.
