St Mary the Virgin is Grade I listed, with a Norman core, a 14th-century Gothic chancel and a Perpendicular tower from the 15th, restored in 1862 and again in 1903. It is the oldest thing left in a village that has otherwise been rebuilt around it.

Thomas Knyvet was granted the manor of Stanwell in 1603, and two years later he was the man who arrested Guy Fawkes under the House of Lords, which is why the free school he endowed in his will opened here in 1624 and still carries his name. He was made Lord Knyvet in 1607. The building is Grade II* listed, no longer a school, and belongs to a housing association now. Lord Knyvett Close, over in TW19 7PF, keeps the two-t spelling.
Stanwell is a village of semis, and much of it is let
The 2011 census put 11,279 people here across 5.13 square kilometres: 1,602 semi-detached houses, 1,257 terraces, 1,316 flats and only 332 detached. Owner-occupation runs at 22.4 per cent outright and 33.0 per cent with a mortgage, which leaves a large rented share and a steady end-of-tenancy diary. Kitchens follow the stock. The village has been losing its edges since 1900
Reservoirs took land around the turn of the century, Heathrow took more, and Poyle was detached to Colnbrook in 1995. Stanwell Place, a 17th-century manor house once owned by King Faisal II of Iraq, was sold for gravel extraction and demolished in the 1960s. Ashford station is two miles south. Terminal 4 is two miles east.
