In 1874 Manor Road was still a private road with a toll on animal traffic, and farmland ran from Lordship Road across to Stamford Hill. Over the next dozen years much of it was built over.

Stamford Hill West is a Hackney ward, first used at the 2014 elections and kept in 2022. It covers Fairholt Road, Heathland Road, Dunsmure Road and St Kilda's Road, part of Bethune Road (the rest is in Woodberry Down ward), parts of Manor Road and Lordship Road, and the west side of Stamford Hill itself. Most building took place in the late 1870s and the 1880s: 94 houses in Bethune Road between 1880 and 1884, more than 100 in Fairholt Road and a neighbouring new road between 1881 and 1886, some of them semi-detached, and most of the 28 in St Kilda's Road between 1882 and 1884. In 1902 the part of Stoke Newington north of Lordship Park and Manor Road was described as well-built houses with long gardens.
At the 2021 Census, 48.1% of the ward's households lived in purpose-built flats, 27.4% in part of a converted or shared house and 23.2% in a whole house.
Eight-person households in Stamford Hill West
The ward stands out for the size of its households. In 2021, 206 of its 3,239 households, 6.4%, had eight or more people, against 1.2% across Hackney and 0.9% across London. Another 231 had six or seven. Hackney's draft Stamford Hill Design Guide gives guidance on front and rear dormer roof extensions for many house types in identified streets. The council's Stamford Hill Area Action Plan, examined in public in September 2025 and the subject of an inspector's final report dated 27 July 2026, says the population has grown and put pressure on housing.
