The town has only been called this since 20 May 2012, when the Lord Lieutenant of Surrey performed a renaming ceremony after the council voted the previous December to put the river back in the name, and Royal Mail adopted Staines-upon-Thames in mid-2013. Before that it was Staines. Before that, Pontibus.
At the bridges, since the Romans
Pontibus means at the bridges, and it appears in the Antonine Itinerary in the early third century. The High Street runs across one of the gravel islands that was the nucleus of the Roman town, and it was pedestrianised in 2002. The granite bridge George Rennie designed opened in April 1832, upstream of the medieval crossing so the foundations could go deeper, and the tolls came off in 1871.
Four households in ten here are flats
At the 2011 census 40.8 per cent of households in the Staines ward were flats, well above the surrounding pattern, and the Two Rivers centre opened in 2002 on the old linoleum works while the Elmsleigh Centre had been opened by the Queen back in February 1980. A flat-heavy town means integrated single ovens under the counter and recirculating hoods, most of them fitted at the same time as the block.
