The residents here are badly outnumbered
Castle Baynard ward, which takes in most of the lanes around the cathedral, has around 400 residents. Across the City it is roughly 8,600 residents against something like 600,000 workers, so we will be honest about what St Paul's is. Offices, with flats wedged in the gaps. The gaps are where our work is: the listed warehouse conversions on Ludgate Square, the ten flats at Ludgate Broadway, the one-beds at Cathedral Court off Carter Lane.
Almost all of them have an integrated single oven under a worktop, usually Neff or Bosch, with a couple of inches of clearance either side. Range cookers are rare in EC4.
Parking runs on a four-hour clock
The whole City is a controlled parking zone, the bays cap you at four hours, and the charge is scaled to the vehicle's emissions. A single takes about ninety minutes, so that clock is not a problem. The van does need to be close, because the racks, shelves and side runners go out to the heated dip tank in it while the cavity and door glass are degreased by hand indoors.
Carter Lane is narrow and takes deliveries all morning. Farringdon Street and New Bridge Street carry red route enforcement, so nothing stops there. We use the pay bays nearer Ludgate Square and walk the parts in.

Short lets keep the work coming
Private rental is the usual tenure in the ward and the tenants are mostly people working three or four streets from their own front door, so they move on a two-year cycle at most and the check-out inventory always lands on the oven. If you want a single oven clean at Cathedral Court or in one of the Ludgate Square conversions, book it the day before the inventory clerk comes rather than the same morning.

Do you work weekends around St Paul's?
Yes, seven days. Weekends are easier here. The delivery vans have gone and the bays free up.
Will the flat smell of chemicals afterwards?
No. The soaking happens in the tank in the van, and the products used indoors are non-caustic. That matters in a studio where the kitchen is part of the living room.
How long does a double oven take?
About two hours, against ninety minutes for a single. We heat-test the oven and sign it off before we leave.
