Where the name St Marylebone comes from
St Marylebone was the parish, and from 1900 to 1965 the metropolitan borough, covering the part of today's Westminster north of Oxford Street and east of Edgware Road and Maida Vale; in 1965 it was merged into the City of Westminster. The name comes from St Mary's by the bourne, the River Tyburn. Westminster's Harley Street audit puts the first village of Tyburn where Marylebone Lane meets Oxford Street, close to Stratford Place, and notes that Marylebone Lane still curves because it followed the river, which was put in a brick culvert around 1800.

The council's audit finds a run of late Victorian and Edwardian buildings along Wigmore Street, several of them listed, and the estate chapel of 1724 by James Gibbs, now St Peter's, Vere Street. Behind the shopfronts most homes are flats. In the Census output area between Wigmore Street and Oxford Street, west of Vere Street, 160 households were counted in 2021: 76.9% in a purpose-built block of flats, 10.6% in a commercial building and 8.1% in part of a converted house.

Parking south of Wigmore Street
Wigmore Street, Welbeck Street, Henrietta Place, Marylebone Lane and Cavendish Square are all on Westminster's traffic-sensitive list. The area is sub-zone F3: paid bays and single yellow lines are controlled 8.30am to 6.30pm Monday to Saturday, resident bays 8.30am to 8.30pm every day. Westminster gives out no visitor permits, so a van uses a paid bay, usually for four hours at most, or a daily trades permit. The trades permit conditions allow resident bays only from 8am to 5.30pm; after that the van must move to a paid or shared-use bay, which matters for a clean that starts late in the afternoon.
