The St Margarets estate began in 1854, soon after the railway arrived, when the Conservative Land Society bought the park of St Margaret's House and laid it out on early garden-suburb lines, with plots big enough to give their owners the vote.

The plots were grouped round three private pleasure gardens, and the dominant form is the detached villa, in a deliberate mix of Gothic and Italianate, in gault, yellow and red brick. St Margarets Road has larger three-storey Italianate pairs; Netherton Road is a cul-de-sac of plain two-storey yellow-brick houses. Until the boundary changes of 1994 most of the estate was in Hounslow. St Margarets station itself opened on 2 October 1876, and the shops on Crown Road and round the station followed in the late 1880s.
Close to the station, on The Barons, is Twickenham Studios, founded in 1913 by Ralph Jupp on the site of a former ice rink.
Who lives in St Margarets
In St Margarets & North Twickenham ward, 65.8% of the 4,805 households owned their home at the 2021 Census and 29.0% rented privately; only 4.2% rented from a social landlord. 12.2% lived in a flat in a converted house and 27.5% in a purpose-built block, while 9.1% had a detached house.

St Margarets parking zones S, S1, S2 and S3
The council's map splits St Margarets into four zones, and its CPZ times page gives each zone its own hours. North of the Chertsey Road, Ailsa Road and St Peter's Road are in S3, St Margarets Riverside, controlled 10am to noon on weekdays. Across St Margarets Road, Netherton Road is in S2, St Margarets North, 10am to 4.30pm on weekdays, with permit bays only. The streets round Crown Road, south of the station, are zone S, St Margarets South, also 10am to 4.30pm on weekdays. The odd one out is S1, Orleans, around Orleans Road: 10am to 4.30pm seven days a week from 1 April to 31 October, weekdays only from 1 November to 31 March. Bank holidays are free in all four, and times can change for events, so check the plate on your street.

Can you come on a Saturday?
Yes. Weekends cost the same as weekdays, and zones S, S2 and S3 have no weekend hours on the council's list; Orleans, zone S1, does between April and October.
Do you clean the hob as well?
Yes, at the same visit: £28 for a gas hob or £23 for a ceramic one, added to the oven price.
