St Johns is named after its parish church, built in the 1850s on land the Lucas family gave. The gift included Lucas Villa on Lewisham Way, which Jonathan Lucas had built in 1823 on his return from the United States and which is now the Welsh Presbyterian Church. The station came later, on 1 June 1873.
Deptford New Town's long leases
The Brookmill Road conservation area, beside the railway line between Lewisham and London Bridge, is the later southern part of Deptford New Town, built on Lucas land between the 1850s and 1870s. Lewisham's 1998 appraisal says the terraces on Admiral Street, Strickland Street and Albyn Road (then St Johns Road) are of better quality than many built at the time, and suggests this is because Lucas granted unusually long leases of 70 years, well aware that a short lease could lead to shoddy building.
The houses there are mostly two-storey and two-bay, built in terraces of four, six or eight, some over a basement, with the roof hidden behind a corniced parapet. The conservation area was designated in 1972 and had 387 houses when the appraisal was written. Next to it, the St John's conservation area, designated in 1976, is centred on the church, the vicarage, the Welsh chapel and the church hall.
Houses of this size usually have a modest kitchen at the back of the ground floor or in the basement, with a freestanding cooker or a built-in single. The racks, trays, side runners and fan cover come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, while the cavity and door glass are degreased by hand, and the door is split where its design allows.

Parking near Lewisham Way
Lewisham Way, where the Stone House (listed Grade II*) and the Welsh chapel stand, is the A20 and one of Lewisham's red routes, so the van needs a space in a side street. The council says 60% of the borough's roads currently allow unrestricted parking; whether your street is in a permit zone, and at what hours, is on the sign where the zone begins.
