Henry Jermyn, Earl of St Albans, began St James's Square in 1663 as houses for nobles and courtiers. The square is now almost entirely commercial; the last private house to survive on it, No. 5, built in 1749 by Matthew Brettingham the elder, stayed a home until the 1970s.

Parking in zone E
St James's shares Westminster's parking zone E with Mayfair; on the council's sub-zone map, Regent Street, Piccadilly Circus and Haymarket mark the edge with zone G. The March 2026 table of hours has paid bays and single yellow lines in sub-zone E1 controlled from 8.30am to 6.30pm, Monday to Saturday, and resident bays controlled 24 hours a day, every day. There are no on-street visitor permits in Westminster; the council tells visitors to use pay-to-park bays, or single yellow lines outside controlled hours.
