The Crown Estate still owns close to half the buildings in St James's, and the homes here sit on the upper floors of them. We clean ovens above the shirtmakers on Jermyn Street, in the lateral flats along Bury Street and King Street, and on Arlington Street next door to the Ritz. It is the only part of London where the lift to your kitchen was fitted into a lightwell a hundred years after the building went up, which is a polite way of saying that four oven shelves, two trays and a set of side runners will not travel down in one go with a technician inside it.
Listed buildings, late kitchens
The flats above Jermyn Street are mostly Grade II listed, with a porter on the door and a kitchen put in long after 1900. Two patterns turn up. The smaller ones have an integrated single wedged into joinery. The bigger laterals off St James's Street and King Street take a 90cm freestanding cooker, which is a range cooker clean at £114 and the only reason our SW1A average sits above the single-oven price.

Piccadilly and Haymarket are red routes and the St James's Market blocks between Jermyn Street and Regent Street eat what is left. We park where we can and walk. Realistically that means a metered bay on Bury Street or Duke Street St James's. If your building has a service entrance rather than a shop-front door, say so when you book.

The flat is a corporate let and I am not there. Can you still do it?
Yes, if someone lets us in. The porter usually can. We ring the person paying when the oven is heat-tested and signed off, and the price does not change either way.
Is the price different for an SW1A address?
No. Fixed on the phone, no premium-area surcharge, no call-out fee inside the North and South Circular.
My cooker is old and the previous cleaner scratched the enamel.
That is usually caustic paste left sitting on the cavity. We do not use it indoors. The door splits where the design allows so the glass gets done from both sides, and if the enamel has already gone we tell you.
