At No. 14 Fournier Street, in many ways the finest house in the street, silk waste was packed between the floor joists, probably to deaden the sound of the looms in the garret.
Elder Street's houses, one room deep
Elder Street, a few minutes north-west across Commercial Street, was probably begun in 1722, and it is the centre of a conservation area the council designated in July 1969. Most of its early eighteenth-century houses are single-fronted and built in pairs, with a basement, three storeys and a roof garret, and most were first built only one room deep. The stair starts with a straight flight and then winds round a central newel. In the 1740s and 1750s, the Survey of London found, several residents were brought before the manor court for keeping hogs.
Winding stairs are slow going with an armful of oven racks, so mention them when you call; only the removable parts come out, and they are soaked and cleaned separately. Dust sheets go down before anything else, which matters on old boards. The cavity, the fan cover and the door glass are degreased by hand in the kitchen, and the door is split where its design allows.
Silk weavers' houses on Fournier Street
Fournier Street, first called Church Street, was the last street built on the Wood and Michell estate, and some of its best houses are on the south side. The gardens behind those houses still had mulberry and fig trees and vines in the twentieth century. Many houses were taken over by firms in the silk trade soon after they were built. Whole houses are rare here. In the census area that runs from Elder Street down past Spitalfields Market (LSOA Tower Hamlets 015B), only 32 of 1,031 households lived in a terraced house at the 2021 Census, 3.1%. 68.3% lived in a purpose-built block and 17.9% in another kind of converted building, for example a former warehouse, school or church. 58.4% rented privately. The streets round the market, Fournier Street and Folgate Street are in the council's parking sub-zone A6. Its residents' bays in the streets west of Brick Lane are controlled from 8.30am to 10pm every day, so the van needs a pay-by-phone bay; those are listed on Folgate Street, Spital Square, Artillery Lane and Commercial Street. Away from residents' bays, A6 is controlled from 8.30am to 7pm on weekdays and 8.30am to 2pm on Sundays, according to the council's zone page.
