Basement kitchens on the weavers' streets
On Fournier Street and Wilkes Street the houses are 18th-century Huguenot silk-weavers' builds, and they keep the original arrangement: cellar-basement, three brick storeys, a mansard garret with the wide weavers' windows at the top. The kitchen is nearly always down in that cellar-basement. That means our technician carries racks and trays up a narrow flight and out to the van at the kerb, and it also means these are the houses where a range turns up, so a 90cm range in a Fournier Street basement kitchen is £114 and takes longer than the flats do. Hawksmoor's Christ Church is at the end of the street, which is how our drivers describe the turning.
The estates and the churn
Most of the ward is not those houses. It is flats. The Holland Estate between Brune Street and Wentworth Street runs to 11 blocks, mixed tenure, mostly one and two beds with some pairs knocked together in the early 1990s to ease overcrowding, and it went over to East End Homes in October 2006. Brune House, Bernard House, Carter House. One under-counter single each, usually electric, usually years behind on cleaning when we get called.
Being a five-minute walk from Liverpool Street, the private lets here turn over hard, and a fair share of our E1 calls are tenants with a check-out date and a deposit to get back.
Parking off Commercial Street
This corner sits in Tower Hamlets mini zone A6, where the controls run Monday to Friday 8:30am to 7pm and Sunday 8:30am to 2pm, and some residents' bays are held until 10pm seven days. Brick Lane itself is a bad bet at the weekend. We pay a bay and walk.

Will a heavily burnt-on oven still come clean?
Usually yes. The tank in the van handles racks and runners that hand-scrubbing will not touch. Carbon on the cavity roof is the slow part.
Do you clean the extractor as well?
Yes, £28 for a hood. In the basement kitchens the ducting is often long and greasy, so say so when you book.
Is the price different for a listed house?
No. Same fixed price, and there is no call-out fee inside the North and South Circular.
How soon can you come?
Often next day. We work seven days, and end of month fills first.
