Southgate is named after the south gate of Enfield Chase, which stood roughly where Chase Road now meets Winchmore Hill Road.
Southgate Circus, rebuilt for the Tube
Until the 1930s the village had no station of its own. The nearest was Palmers Green, opened in 1871, with a horse bus up the hill. Once the Piccadilly line extension was sanctioned in 1930, the centre was rebuilt round Charles Holden's station, a circular drum set in a roundabout and topped by a finial with a ball on top, opened in March 1933 and raised to Grade II* in 2009. Parades of shops with flats over them went up at the same time in Crown Lane and Ashfield Parade; Station Parade curves round the bus station, and The Broadway is a tall curved parade between The Bourne and Winchmore Hill Road. By 1934, 750 houses were planned round the station.
Flats are now the biggest single type of home. At the 2021 Census, 42.0% of the 5,666 households in Southgate ward lived in a purpose-built block and 33.3% in a semi; 33.4% rented privately and 59.1% owned.
A flat over a parade often has its own street door, a staircase and a busy road outside. None of that changes the job: racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, while the cavity, the fan cover and the door glass are degreased by hand in the kitchen.
Meadway's 1920s houses
South-east of the Circus, Meadway, Greenway, Bourne Avenue and Parkway were the first roads built on the Southgate House estate, 64 acres between the High Street and The Bourne, sold after the last of the Walkers died in 1922. Edmondson's, a Muswell Hill firm, bought the land and built detached and semi-detached houses, some in a 'cottage' style, in the mid 1920s, with older single-storey garages in the gaps between them. The streets became a conservation area in November 2008. The council's 2014 review notes many of those gaps being filled with single-storey extensions, and front gardens paved for cars.
A kitchen that has gained a side extension can have room for a range cooker, which is a longer job than a built-in oven.

Parking near Southgate Circus
On the council's zone map as archived in December 2022, Station Parade, Crown Lane and Chase Road were in an all-day zone, Monday to Saturday 9am to 6.30pm, and Meadway was in a one-hour zone, 11am to noon on weekdays. Enfield marks each controlled parking zone with signs at its entrance giving the hours, and outside those hours you can park on the street. The Circus itself is a roundabout and bus interchange, so for a flat over the parades the nearest side street is the useful thing to tell us. On the Meadway roads a drive or a paved front garden helps, since the team needs somewhere to park.

Very satisfied with the service. They were slightly late at first but I got a call from customer service to let me know, and it was all fine. The oven man, as he called himself, arrived and worked very hard for a couple of hours. My oven now looks like it has never been used.
