Georgian houses round The Green
Southgate Green was the old village centre. In the 18th century wealthy Londoners began to settle in Southgate. Nos. 3 to 6 The Green date from about 1720, and the row at nos. 23 to 32 was designed by the architect Michael Searles in 1775-1776. On Cannon Hill stand three 19th-century houses, Cannon Hall, The Coach House and The Hermitage, and nearby the Arnos Grove mansion, its core built about 1720 and listed Grade II*. Christ Church, by Sir George Gilbert Scott, replaced the old Weld Chapel in 1863.
The village stayed small because the Walkers of Arnos Grove would not sell land for building, and the railways passed it by. The conservation area, designated in 1968, now covers 31.7 hectares and about 160 buildings along The Green, the High Street, Cannon Hill and Waterfall Road, with the Walker Cricket Ground and Southgate Cemetery added in 1994.

The Census shows a wider mix than the old fronts suggest. In Enfield 028A, a small 2021 Census area that takes in part of The Green, 39.4% of 682 households lived in a purpose-built block of flats, 33.7% in a semi and 18.6% in a detached house. 61.6% owned their home and 30.0% rented privately. So one street can hold a big period kitchen with a 90cm range and a flat with a built-in single, and each is priced by what is in it. For a let, the invoice can go to the letting agent, and keys for an empty flat can be picked up by arrangement.

Parking on The Green and Cannon Hill
In 2024 Enfield's proposed extension of the Arnos Grove parking zone reached north to Waterfall Road and Cannon Hill, with controls from 8am to 7.30pm every day. In 2025 the council dropped a group of streets and kept the existing one hour, 11am to noon on weekdays; by October 2025 it said the scheme needed more design work. On the council's zone map as archived in December 2022, The Green itself was outside any zone. Whatever has happened since, the signs at the end of your road give the current rules. My house is listed. Does the clean affect that?
The clean does not alter the building. Dust sheets go down, the removable parts come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity is cleaned by hand where it stands.
Does a big house cost more?
The price follows the appliance, so a single in a flat costs the same as a single in a Georgian house.
Can you collect keys for an empty flat?
Yes, by arrangement with the landlord or letting agent.
