The recreation ground on Southfield Road was bought by Acton's urban district council in 1908 from Wilkinson Sword, the sword and razor maker, which had a large site in Southfield Road, containing a former brickfield, by 1905.
Southfield's Edwardian streets
Roads north of Acton Green and west of Bedford Park were laid out in 1898, but building only started after 1900; on the Southfield Park estate off Southfield Road, and in Carlton Road to the north, it also began in 1900. Southfield ward had 7,296 households, and 51.7% of them owned their home, outright or with a mortgage; in Ealing's other three Acton wards, East, North and South Acton, the figure was between 32.5% and 34.8%. 28.1% lived in a terraced house and 22.5% in part of a converted house, while 34.8% rented privately.
Where an Edwardian terrace has been extended at the back, the bigger kitchen may have a built-in double or a 90cm range. The postcode is W4, but the council is Ealing and the streets were part of Acton parish. Hounslow's Chiswick wards begin just to the south and south-east, and Acton Green, to the west, is in Southfield ward too.
