Southend was the last settlement in Lewisham on the road south to Bromley, and it was not built up until the 1920s. In the eighteenth century Ephraim How and his son John used the water power of its Lower Mill to make knives and forks reputed to be the best in England.
A village between two council estates
The leading landowners were the Forsters of Southend Hall, and their younger son's house, Flower House, was enlarged in stages before it became a private asylum early in the twentieth century. In the 1910s trams reached Southend and turned the village into the holiday playground of Lewisham's suburban population. After the First World War the London County Council built its Bellingham estate on one side of the village and Downham on the other, and private builders took the few fields left. The Second World War ended two of the big houses: Park House was destroyed by a flying bomb in 1944, and Flower House, damaged by bombing, was demolished the same year and replaced by the Flower House estate.
On Bromley Road, St John the Baptist's church and its hall, built in 1824 as a chapel, have both been listed at Grade II since 1954.
Flats and semis off Beckenham Hill Road
Southend is now a mix of blocks and houses. Hoover House and Brunner House are blocks of flats on Beckenham Hill Road, and Millcroft House is in Melfield Gardens, while the houses on Blacklands Road and that part of Southend Lane are mostly semi-detached. In the census area that covers them (Lewisham 038C), 41.7% of about 700 households lived in a purpose-built block of flats in 2021, 29.9% in a terraced house and 23.2% in a semi. Just under half (49.2%) owned their home and 37.4% rented from the council or a housing association.
Since 2022 the streets either side of Beckenham Hill Road fall into two wards: Melfield Gardens, Blacklands Road and part of Southend Lane are in Catford South, while Hoover and Brunner Houses are in Downham. Both wards are in Lewisham.
