Southbury station opened in 1891 as Churchbury, closed twice, and only took the name Southbury when it reopened on 21 November 1960.
Edwardian terraces off Southbury Road
The Victoria County History records a burst of building on both sides of Southbury Road just before the First World War. Terraces went up in Cecil Avenue in 1901, in Clive Road in 1904 and in Sketty Road between 1903 and 1910, and trams reached Enfield Town along Southbury Road in 1911. The Great Cambridge Road came through in 1923-4, and between 1931 and 1937 another 21 estates, about 2,500 houses, were approved on its eastern side.
The 2021 Census gives the mix today. Southbury ward (the 2022 boundaries) had 5,964 households: 41.3% lived in a terraced house, 18.1% in a semi and 30.1% in a purpose-built block of flats. A terrace of that age usually has its kitchen in the narrow back addition, so the cooker is often a built-in single under the worktop or a slim freestanding one. Where the kitchen has been extended into the side return, there is room for a built-in double at eye level.

Getting the van to your door near the A10
A 1995 traffic order made the A10 Great Cambridge Road a clearway, where stopping is banned at any time, so the van does not stop on it. Off Southbury Road, the council's walking and cycling route from Enfield Town to Ponders End station has changed the side streets: a bus gate on Fotheringham Road at the Southbury Road junction lets only buses and cycles in from Southbury Road, with camera enforcement from 15 July 2025, and stretches of Percival Road now run one way north and of Bertram Road one way south.
Parking zones are patchy. On the council's own zone map as archived in December 2022, the Enfield Town zone (Monday to Saturday, 8am to 6.30pm) reached Eaton Road at the western edge of the ward, while Clive Road, Percival Road and Sketty Road were outside any zone. The council's route page (updated March 2026) says a permit zone proposed for the area will not be implemented at this time. Zones can still be added, so read the sign at the end of your road and give us the street name when you book; we also need a working socket and the oven cool on arrival.
Renting in Southbury ward
In 2021, 54.5% of the ward's households owned their home, 26.8% rented privately and 17.2% rented from the council or a housing association. Council officers had argued the site suited 605 homes.
