In 1698 William III granted Francis Merrick a Wednesday cattle market and two fairs a year at Southall, and in 1816 the market was said to be inferior only to Smithfield for the sale of fat cattle. The Victoria County History of Middlesex found the Wednesday market still held for horses, cattle, pigs, carts and harness in 1961.
A market village that became a factory town
The parish had 697 people in 1801. The Great Western Railway opened Southall station in 1839, brick-making grew with the canals, a line of factories had appeared along the railway by 1914, and by 1951 the population had reached 55,896. The county history says many Commonwealth migrants were drawn to Southall by its light industries; Sikhs began to settle in the town in 1953, and by 1967 the Sikh community was estimated at about 10,000.
Today the town is usually split three ways: the houses around Lady Margaret Road and Dormers Wells to the north, the shops of the High Street and Southall Broadway in the middle, and Old Southall south of the railway, with the station, Southall Green and Norwood Green. The postcodes are UB1 and UB2, and the prices are the same in both.
Around the High Street and Southall Park
The Red Lion on the High Street is a Grade II listed pub, and an inn of that name has stood in Northcott or Southall since the 17th century. Southall Park, the public park just south of the Uxbridge Road, shares its name with a large house that stood south of the main road opposite North Road. By 1855 that house was a private asylum, and it burned down in 1883.
The census area the House of Commons Library calls Southall Park takes in the east end of the High Street. In 2021 it had 2,753 households: 36.0% lived in a semi, 21.3% in a terrace and 23.8% in a purpose-built flat, and 4.2% in a commercial building such as a flat over a shop. 39.3% rented privately and 29.1% owned outright.

In a semi or a terrace the cooker might be freestanding or built in, single or double; say which on the phone, because each has its own price. The racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand indoors, on dust sheets.
New homes on the old gasworks
From 1869 the Brentford Gas Company made gas immediately north of the railway, and most of the works was rebuilt in 1929-30. Its 1932 gasholder, with LH painted on its side to guide pilots approaching Heathrow, came down in 2019. The 88-acre site is now Berkeley's Green Quarter, and Berkeley dates its masterplan to 2016. In January 2026 Berkeley said more than 1,200 homes were finished and that a revised masterplan for over 8,000 had been approved.
New-build flats usually have an oven built into the kitchen units, and some are pyrolytic.

Controlled parking zones in Southall
Three of Ealing council's controlled zones cover the town centre and Old Southall, and Zone L keeps different hours from the other two.
- Zone L (the High Street, the Broadway and the streets beside them): controlled later into the evening than the other two, with its hours on the Southall Broadway page
- Zones V and LL: 8.30am to 6pm Monday to Saturday and 2pm to 6pm on Sunday. V covers The Green, King Street, Featherstone Road and the streets around them; LL covers Regina Road, Lea Road, Adelaide Road and their neighbours
Plenty of Southall streets are in none of the three. Wherever you are, read the signs for yellow lines, and give us the street so we can plan where the van stops.
Southall oven cleaning questions
Do you clean ovens in the Green Quarter homes?
Yes, at the prices above. Tell us the building and the floor if it is a flat, and how visitors get a van close to the entrance.
Can you come on a Sunday?
Yes, seven days a week, and a weekend visit costs the same as a weekday one. On Sundays the controls in Southall's zones start in the afternoon, so the hours above matter less for a morning visit.
Is UB2 charged differently from UB1?
No. The price depends on the appliance, not the postcode, and it is fixed on the phone before the visit.

What customers tell us
Arrived promptly and did a great job cleaning the oven, hob and extractor. They look like new now and for a very reasonable price too.
I would certainly recommend this service, very efficient and good value for money. The young man did a great job and even cleaned the kitchen floor. Thank you.
Brilliant clean, my oven looks like brand new. A 5 star clean.
