Before there was a Broadway there was Northcott. The Victoria County History of Middlesex places that hamlet on the Uxbridge road around the junction of South Road and High Street, and a survey of about 1657 counts 4 houses and 27 cottages, four of which were inns.
Streets that followed the trams
Horse trams ran along the Uxbridge Road from 1867, and electric ones reached Shepherd's Bush in 1901 and Uxbridge in 1904. The county history records the parish's population rising from 7,896 in 1881 to 13,200 in 1901, a jump the county history says was a direct result of the Uxbridge Road tramways. By 1914 the area immediately round the Broadway was built up, with Beaconsfield Road as its southern edge.
In Southall Broadway ward the 2021 Census counted 2,842 households. 34.0% lived in a terraced house and 29.7% in a semi; 9.5% had part of a converted or shared house, and 4.5% lived in a commercial building, which is how the census counts a flat over a shop. The Grade II* listed cinema on South Road, opened in 1929 as The Palace with a Chinese-style front by the architect George Coles and reopened as the Himalaya Palace in 2001, is in the same ward.
A flat over one of the shops usually means a street door and a staircase between the kitchen and the pavement. The method is the same: racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity, the fan cover and the door glass are degreased by hand upstairs, on dust sheets.

Zone L hours, Sundays included
The Broadway, Beaconsfield Road, Hambrough Road and parts of South Road and Lady Margaret Road are in Ealing council's Zone L. The zone is controlled from 10am to 8pm Monday to Saturday and from 2pm to 8pm on Sunday. Outside those hours, on an early start or a Sunday morning, the zone's controls are off, though the street signs can still carry other restrictions. Weekend visits cost the same as weekday ones. The team needs somewhere to park close by.

Does the door glass get cleaned too?
Yes. The door glass is cleaned by hand, and the door is split to reach the inner glass where its design allows.
What should I have ready?
A working socket, the oven switched off and cool, and the name of the nearest side street if the shop front has no space for the van.
